The Professional Licensure Unit is responsible
for determining the qualifications for and
issuing licenses to teachers, administrators,
and other instructional personnel in the state.
In addition, staff provide technical assistance
to individuals seeking licensure and to local
school officials who must hire licensed staff

Fingerprint Background Check Information
If you are applying for a New Mexico educator
license for the first time, you must complete
a fingerprint background check. Fingerprints
must be taken by a Law Enforcement Agency
or other agency with staff trained to take
fingerprints. Licensure Unit staff will not
take fingerprints but will process them once
taken. You may request fingerprint cards by
contacting the Educator Ethics Bureau at 827-6104
or 827-6439 fax: 827-6447, or you may contact
a local school district.
4. Teacher Testing Requirements
If you have been issued a one-year teaching
license, you will be required to achieve passing
scores on the New Mexico Teacher Assessments
before the expiration date of the license. Passage
