TYPE Q PRELIMINARY CERTIFICATE

Applicants who hold a current, valid teaching certificate from another state may be eligible for the Type Q Preliminary Certificate. The Type Q Preliminary Certificate is valid for one year, effective the date the complete application packet is received in the office of Teacher Education and Certification. Passing Praxis I or CBEST scores must be submitted to EED within the effective dates of the certificate. Upon receipt of either passing Praxis I scores or submission of a CBEST Passing Status Verification card, the Type Q Preliminary Certificate will be extended two more years. If passing scores are not received by EED within the first year, the Type Q Preliminary certificate will expire and you are only eligible for Regular certification. To view Alaska's passing scores for the Praxis I exam, visit http://www.eed.state.ak.us/TeacherCertification/praxis.html

Special Notes about the Type Q Preliminary Certificate:

  1. The out-of-state certificate must be a standard, renewable certificate, not a temporary or substitute certificate.
  2. A teacher holding a Type Q Preliminary Certificate may be employed as a teacher in an Alaska school district only if the teacher certificate issued by the other state is valid at the time the teacher commences instructional services in Alaska.
  3. A Type Q Preliminary Certificate is non-renewable. After holding a Type Q, applicants are only eligible to apply for the Type A Regular Certificate. Before applying for the Type A Regular Certificate, applicants must meet all current requirements for certification. It is the responsibility of the applicant to know what all current certification requirements are.
  4. The endorsements on the Type Q Preliminary certificate will be the same as those on the current, valid, out-of-state certificate submitted. If you hold more than one out-of state certificate, please choose ONE to submit with the application.
  5. During the life of the Preliminary Certificate no additional endorsements may be added or may endorsements be removed.
  6. The out-of-state certificate submitted must be the official, original certificate or a duplicate certificate issued by that state's Department of Education. Photocopies will not be accepted. If you would like your original, out-of-state certificate returned to you, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
